What is SEXUAL HEALTH?

Sexual health is an essential part of your overall health and wellbeing. It’s about feeling safe, respected and empowered to make decisions about your body and relationships without pressure, judgement or harm.

Sexual health includes:

  • Access to reliable sexual health information, support and care

  • Understanding risks and how to reduce them

  • Living in a community that supports healthy, respectful relationships

Sexual health covers a wide range of experiences and issues - puberty, consent, orientation, gender identity, relationships and pleasure, as well as challenges such as STIs, unintended pregnancy, sexual difficulties and sexual violence.

“…a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being in relation to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction or infirmity. Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination and violence. For sexual health to be attained and maintained, the sexual rights of all persons must be respected, protected and fulfilled.”

enhance the sexual health and wellbeing of all Nova Scotians. SHNS and the member-centres are all nonprofit, registered charities.
